Manas
Monthly literary magazine ‘Manas’ was launched on the Kumar Purnima Day of 1972 under the editorship of Krushna Prasad Misra. The magazine aimed to encourage young writers and to make them socially committed.
Krushna Prasad was a multifaceted writer of story, novel and essay as well as being a student of philosophy. This made the editorials of Manas especially important. In the editorial of June 1977 issue he has implored all writers to stress on the quality of their output. The title of the editorial of September-October 1977 was ‘Class, caste and class-struggle’. The January 1978 editorial presents a review of Odia literature in 1977 and has offered his own views on its flow. He has high praise for essayist Sarat Mohanty’s recent book under the title ‘Essence of Existentialism’. June 1978 editorial laments the superficial and excessive reference to any text without going into it deeply as this degenerates the philosophy of the text.
Editorial of February 1978 focuses on the Sahitya Akademi award for Ramakanta Rath’s ‘Saptama Rutu’ and reviews his other writings. September-October 1979 editorial speaks on the ‘Gandhi Nehru Study Circle’ and emphasises the relationship between the political leadership and intellectuals. August 1978 editorial is on ‘Death’ in which Krushna Prasad presents the philosophical theories on death.
The covers of Manas was also much talked about at the time. The magazine also carried stories, serialised novels, essays, book reviews etc. which were of a special kingd and had a definite outlook. Manas can be credited with creating writers like Nrusinha Charan Panda, Yasodhara Misra, Bauribandhu Kar.
Manas continued in publication till 1980.
