Bhupen Mahapatra Compilation

Bhupen Mohapatra has established his reputation as a major modern Odia writer. Over the course of the last six decades, he has immensely enriched Odia literature writing nearly fifty books, which include novels, short stories, essays, satire, travelogues, belles lettres and literary criticism. He has also authored a highly acclaimed autobiography.

His short stories and novels deeply affirm life and seek to reflect and explore a complex social reality. They have received a warmly enthusiastic readerly response as they embody an inspiring vision of a renewed social order. Several of his stories have reached a wider readership through translation into English, Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Bengali and other languages.

The years he spent as a police officer and a senior official in the CISF gave him an opportunity to travel to and live in different parts of the country and closely observe people and places, varied lifeways and intriguing facets of human character. This lends a rare depth and intensity to his writings. He has also distinguished himself as the editor of several literary magazines such as Nabapatra, Istahar and Nagara. Cultural organisations in Rourkela have benefited from his close involvement with their activities. He also played an active role in founding and managing cultural organisations outside Odisha.
