‘Nabajivan’ holds an important place among the Odia magazines published during the post-independence period. The first issue of this magazine was published in February 1956 with Sri Chintamani Misra (1904-1980) as its founder and editor. The editorial of the first issue states, “If one gets attracted to the cultural past, in stead of fearing it like a ghost, one’s thoughts and the development process will be enriched. We hope that Nabajivan will be able to perform its duty in this regard with the help of its patron writers.”
Many well established writers were its regular contributors. Among them were Sarala Devi, Sriramchandra Dash, Biraj Mohan Senapati, Surya Narayana Dash, Laksmi Narayana Sahu, Srinibas Misra, Naba Kishor Das, Jayakrusna Patnaik, Dhaneswar Samal, Baidyanath Misra, Krusnachandra Panigrahi, Nityananda Mahapatra, Kalindi Charana Panigrahi etc. Stories and novels of Raj Kishor Patnaik, Rai Charana Das, Umesh Chandra Dutta, Raj Kishor Ray, Harischandra Badal found place in this magazine. Poets like Krusnachandra Misra, Prafulla Chandra Patnaik, Gopala Chandra Misra, Rabindra Nath Singh, Kali Charana Patnaik, Basant Kumari Patnaik, Bira Kishor Das and many others contributed to the pages of Nabajivan.
In order to attract the readers towards science Nabajivan carried popular articles on the subject by writers like Basant Kumar Behura and Gadadhar Misra. Other areas of literature like travelogue, kabya, drama etc. were also found place in the magazine. Its editorials were thought provoking and touched upon social, political and economic issues. On the whole, the magazine was useful for everybody.

The magazine copies were made available courtesy of Sri Subrat Kumar Misra, grandson of Sri Chintamani Misra. Dr. Santosh Kumar Mohanty and Dr. Sricharan Mohanty played an important role in collecting the issues.
