Nabarabi
Of the many Odia magazines published after independence several important ones came out of Calcutta (now Kolkata). Some of these were Samabesa, Asantakali, Nabarabi. Nabarabi started publication in July 1970 and continued till 1976 December.
The chief patron of Nabarabi was Patiram Parija who wanted to see a high quality Odia magazine like the popular ‘Desh’ in Bengali. He made provision for emoluments for the writers. His son – Rabindra Kumar Jena – edited the magazine which was printed at the press owned by noted the novelist Kanduri Charan Das.
The editorial of the first issue stated the objective of the magazine as – “just as blood relation strengthens family ties, literary union emboldens the bindings among a language and people. Odia language, Odia literature are our beloved treasures, we are Odia no matter where we are. We have always kept in mind this fact while publishing Nabarabi.”
The first issue was priced at 80 p. only. The issues carried a wide spectrum of writings including story, poem, essay, novel, drama, astrological predictions as well as sections devoted to women and children. The Puja issues were special ones with added attractions. Publication of the magazine stopped after the passing away of its patron Patiram in 1978. It reappeared after many years under new editors.
