Odiyana
Prafulla Pathagara, as a public library at Odishagada, Post – AshramaPatna of Jagatsingpur district, was established during 1993 by the Society for Development of Rural Literature, a non-profit, non-political, charitable Cultural Society. It is dedicated to preserving and promoting dying art and culture of Odisha , especially of rural areas. It has published 35 rare books in English on culture and history of Odisha including the magnum opus Imaging Odisha edited by Prof Herman Kulke. It has played a significant role in reviving and promoting the famous Odia ballad, the PALA, by organizing festivals, competitions, through television, training and development programmes.
Another landmark achievement of the Society is the development of ODI-ART complex and establishment of Purvasha Folk and Tribal Art Museum at Barakul, on the bank of Chilika, spread over an area of five acres of land. The complex aims at showcasing the rich folk and tribal art heritage and creating a Cultural Highway with artistic performance and display of creative talent live.
In order to cultivate reading habit in the rural areas and promote a culture of critical appreciation of published books the library has taken a novel initiative of organizing review competitions of chosen books amongst the students of the local educational institutions. Review meetings are being conducted periodically in the library premises by inviting eminent literary critics. Based on their critical evaluation an E-journal, titled Odiyana, is released periodically. So far sixteen E-journals are issued; the latest being a short story collection, Bruttankan, authored by Sri Swadesh Sundar Patnaik.
