Sucharita
The magazine which created a stir among the Odia periodicals – Sucharita – was launched in August, 1975. It was decided that the magazine will start in the International Year of Women and only women writers will contribute. The magazine ran for 27 years and major contributors to its pages were women writers. It provided a good forum for new writers.
Many women started writing for Sucharita and became established writers later. The magazine had several sections like story, poetry, novels, travelogue etc. Besides these it had features like household tips, cookery, sewing which was an attraction for common women. The main objective of this magazine was women should write on women’s problem which will create greater awareness among women.
The magazine was edited by Sakuntala Panda and was managed by her husband Harihar Panda who looked after its printing, circulation etc. Their daughter Susmita Bagchi joined the effort first as associate editor and took over as the editor. After Sucharita a few women’s magazines appeared, but could not be as popular as Sucharita.
